The Geminids meteor showers peak this weekend around 2:AM each night. We could see up to 50 meteors an hour as Earth crosses paths with the comet 3200 Phaethon. A meteor shower is beautiful for the astronomer, beautifully symbolic for the astrologer; new material filters into our atmosphere and symbolically coincides with fresh ideas, new material and problems filtering into our lives. This, along with a lovely trine between expansive Jupiter and change-master Uranus, can help us shift gears. We can use these to loosen up what’s held us tightly and choose a different path, reprogram our habits, and support positive change the culture.
As the weekend begins, the stars- and the headlines- invoke complex feelings, melancholic sadness with speckles of temper braided with seasonal warmth and sparkle. As always, we can choose how to respond; our experiences can soften our hearts with compassion and connection, we could get caught up in a whirlwind of strong feelings or let them wash through us, or we can sharpen a bitter edge as Mars forms an easy, inspiring trine to creative Neptune which uplifts the spirits, while emotional Venus conjuncts deep Pluto and takes us down to look under the rocks. Let’s choose compassion.
We still may need to perform the social rituals of the year, attend their work party or go to community ice-skating. Mercury is now in Sagittarius which makes it easier to dance, skate, ski and find something to laugh about, it sparks our curiosity for what’s going on around the globe, our curiosity about anything away from our familiar territory. We may rather travel to the tropics, but Mercury in Sagittarius can help us make the most of wherever we are.
We can do this even as some parts of our mind and soul are processing the transits and the headlines, dealing with the worries and concerns for our ecosystem, our country’s political health, and potentially some personal stories as both Mercury and Venus aspect Pluto. We could experience emotional sense of loss, or melancholy over what is missing from years gone by, people who’ve left, or just feel tired at the end of a long semester and wonder if we’ve got what it takes to head into the holidays. But, after some personal processing and redirection, the holiday magic can return.
Take advantage of a competent Virgo Moon Tuesday and Wednesday to take care of business and health; clean the desk, house, and generally get the logistics in order. Then let the seasonal magic twinkle on Thursday as the Moon enters friendly Libra. Track packages, communiqués and travel carefully December 18-21 as Mercury squares Neptune, we can feel the extra magic, and a disinclination to work, but traveling conditions and directions could be confusing. Venus enters communal Aquarius on Thursday and helps us look forward to gatherings of all types.
Friday, December 13: Emotions swirl like a marbled cake today. Venus conjunct Pluto can bring deep feelings, obsession and attempt to control the ones we love, or a chance to remember who and what matters in the face of some challenge. A self-protective flare hits just before dinner time, but the evening opens up with potential for heartfelt magic. A grand trine in water signs – as the Cancer Moon trines Mars and Neptune- keeps emotions at high tide. Look up and see the meteor showers if the skies clear, and whether or not the meteors a visible, imagine that new material, new ideas and options are entering the world.

Puttering gives the emotional body and mind a chance to process recent events and let us catch up with ourselves. The mood shifts as the Moon enters Leo tonight, more outgoing more connected, and the glitter grows brighter as the evening progresses. It’s a good night for a winter party.
